NEW JERSEY – There is a lot to see and do in Jersey Shore this season.
Many annual events return this spring and summer after the coronavirus pandemic canceled them last year.
The Jersey Shore is full of activities and events that people look forward to every week.
Most cities are expected to open their beaches on Memorial Day weekend. Some will be open daily, but others will only operate on weekends until mid-June. Read more: Patch’s 2021 Jersey Shore Beach Guide Amid COVID: What to Know
Patch has rounded up five events taking place along the shore this week, including a beach kite festival and a patriotic marching band show.
Wildwoods International Kite Festival
Kitemakers from around the world will be flying their colorful creations on the beach behind the Wildwoods Convention Center this weekend. The festival starts Friday at noon with the Festival Field tent opening and a light-up kite at Rio Grande Ave beach at 9 p.m.
Saturdays and Sundays include the East Coast Kite Championships on the beach starting at 9 a.m. daily, as well as kite exhibitions and workshops. A kite festival auction open to the public will take place in the Center on Saturday at 7 p.m.
On Monday will be the World Indoor Kite Competition from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. inside the center where kite aviators will demonstrate how they can fly a kite without wind.
Friday film at the Ocean County Arts Guild
The Ocean County Artists’ Guild is hosting its first film Friday in Island Heights for people to listen to music, see artwork and watch a locally made film.
Following music by Johnny Nameless at 6 p.m., a short documentary will screen at 7 p.m. about Franke Parese, a 94-year-old WWII veteran who lives and rides his bike in the Jersey Shore.
The free event includes a post-screening discussion. The Ocean County Artists Guild is located at 22 Chestnut Ave in Island Heights.
Handicraft Fair at Barnegat Light
The Viking Village Art and Craft Show will take place at Barnegat Light on Sunday, May 30 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The fair will feature fine arts, photography, ceramics, wood crafts, clothing and handmade jewelry. Viking Village is located at 1801 Bayview Ave in Barnegat Light.
20th annual maritime port crafts fair
Further up the coast, the 20th edition of the Seaport Craft Show will take place in Huddy Park, Highlands on Sunday, May 30.
The craft fair will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a collection of various handicrafts from over 60 artisans and craftspeople.
Chris Morrisy will provide music from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Patriotic Marching Band in Cape May
While most Memorial Day festivities are observed next Monday, Cape May celebrates early Sunday with a free Atlantic Brass Band concert as part of Cape May.series of music festivals.
The free outdoor concert will feature American music starting at 7 p.m. at Rotary Park in Cape May.
