An artist from Omaha is making a statement across the world with a billboard in Ukraine.

In his home art studio in Omaha, Tom Kerr is used to creating masterpieces.

You may have seen some of his work, like Omaha O! or his drawings of McGruff the Crime Dog for the National Crime Prevention Council.

But his last mission in particular carries much more weight.

“I thought, let’s not be cute and flippant. That’s really important,” Kerr said.

This is a watercolor of Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky.

It bears a quote from the president himself saying, “The fight is here, I need ammunition, not a round.”

“The Zelensky quote, to me, is an incredibly heroic man. That word gets used way too often. But this man is incredibly brave to say what he did and act like he is,” Kerr said.

Kerr says he is working with an artist in Arkansas who sent him the quote to paint a picture.

It was about three weeks ago.

“Ironically, one of Rick’s other artists is in Ukraine, and he fell in love with it and wanted to make it into a billboard,” Kerr said.

Now the painting hangs in the middle of southeastern Ukraine.

Thanks to this Ukrainian artist who mounted it himself.

“He said ‘yeah, there’s sirens going’ and we said, ‘Get undercover, what are you doing? And he said, ‘No, it’s got to go up,'” Kerr said.

And in the midst of the war, Omaha’s artwork would have a big impact on a small Ukrainian town.

“I thought his face really conveyed what I think everyone is feeling right now, that you know, we’re not going to take it anymore,” Kerr said.

Kerr says you can donate to Ukraine here.

There is also a Zazzle website dedicated to Ukrainian designs, you can find that link here.

You can find Kerr’s colleague Rick London’s website with Zelensky’s quotes here.
