Wolfgang Beltracchi – the infamous German art forger – sells thousands of NFTs of the world’s most valuable painting.

Beltracchi, who is best known for his decades-long project of forging famous works of art, joins the world of non-fungible tokens, where digital assets function as a type of collector’s item and cannot be duplicated.

It sells 4,608 original digital artworks of the 500-year-old “Salvator Mundi” painting, according to its website. The collection, called “Les Grands”, is a “digital journey through the history of art” as each version of the recreation “Salvator Mundi” incorporates the style of seven eras of art, including painters such as Picasso, Van Gogh and Da Vinci.

The original painting “Salvator Mundi”, which in Latin means “Savior of the world,” sold for $ 450.3 million at a 2017 Christie’s auction to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Experts, however, struggled to determine if Da Vinci really painted the room.

Beltracchi’s recreations of the piece will be on display when the sale begins in eight to ten days, a spokesperson told The Block, adding that the artist chose to make the collection because he is “the only person with the skills to implement it. He has managed to fool ‘art experts’ hundreds of times with his recreations of works by famous painters. “

Beltracchi was sentenced to six years in prison after being convicted in 2011 of forging 14 famous works of art and selling them for millions of dollars. His project began in the 1970s and rocked the art world when it was discovered.

In a statement to The Block, Beltracchi said, “The NFT Marketplace provides artists with a platform to independently market themselves and makes them independent from the traditional mechanisms of the art market.” The artist did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
