Painting tips we learned from Block stars Ronnie and Georgia’s latest Instagram update on their renovation

Anyone who watched The block will know that no competitor has ever shown as much skill and passion for a good paint job as Ronnie Caceres.

The All Star contestant is so specific about paint quality that he only let his wife Georgia pick up a brush once during the show’s 2021 season.

Ronnie also shared his painting knowledge with rookie renovator Vito, who was overwhelmed with the task from the start.

Now Ronnie has passed that wisdom on to the rest of us in a series of Instagram Stories.

Ronnie revealed these tips while painting the first room he and Georgia are updating as part of their home renovation.

Ronnie started painting the room by doing the ceiling using a stretch pole and roller.

“The best advice a professional painter ever gave me was to go long strokes, and always go one way, then the other way to finish,” he said.

Ronnie’s next tip was to invest in a good pole. He spent $150 on his pole and has had it for 15 years.

Then it was time to paint the walls. Ronnie first sanded the wall before applying an acrylic sealer.

“If you don’t put the right sealant on the drywall and then put paint on the drywall, it’s going to flake off,” he said.

In total, Ronnie applied three coats: one sealant and two coats of paint.

When choosing a paint roller, Ronnie prefers to use one with a thick fabric. He also likes to put a lot of paint on the roller before painting the wall.

When doing the second coat, Ronnie didn’t go all the way to the ceiling or to the baseboards. This is because it usually rolls first and then cuts with a brush around the edges.

After sharing this trick, Ronnie was hit with questions from followers about why he was rolling before cutting, so he clarified his technique.

“I only do the prep, so you can do either one. It’s the last layer, so the third layer, you have to treat one wall at a time, you have to cut and then roll each wall. little doesn’t matter how you do it the first time,” he explained.

With that done, Ronnie gave his most pro tip yet, which was to use an LED light to highlight any imperfections so they can be fixed now before doing the final coat.

Next, it was time for Ronnie to apply the second coat around the baseboards.

“For me, I like to put tape on the floor, then I do the tops first, because remember, that’s my primer, then with a roller, I’m very careful [roll the paint on]. This is how we did it on The block“said Ronnie.

Three hours later the wall was dry, so Ronnie checked for imperfections before sanding with a tool he bought from a professional paint store.

To sand the wall, Ronnie went from left to right in a sweeping motion to make sure he had sanded the entire space.

It was finally time for the third and final layer. This time, Ronnie “cut” first by painting under the ceiling eaves. He used Dulux’s Whisper White color.

In order to achieve perfection with his cut, Ronnie used a technique he called “bubble chasing”.

This involves putting paint on your brush and then “chasing the bubble” as you paint in a long, even stroke.

Ronnie and Georgia started their renovation with this room because it requires no structural changes.

They are currently awaiting approval for most of the changes they plan to make to their home.

The couple hinted that their renovation will include modifications to the backyard and kitchen and replacement of the veranda.

We can’t wait to hear the duo’s other tips and tricks as they continue their renovation. And we’re looking forward to the eventual big reveal of the transformation, which should be stunning considering how beautiful the house they’ve produced. The block in 2017 and 2021 were.
