Why glitter is flowing to the premier new Albion-Fields sculpture park

In perfect harmony with the arrival of sunny days, the who’s who of London’s cultural elite made the pilgrimage last week to the Oxfordshire countryside to christen Albion-Fields; the latest venture of the company’s curator and art dealer Michael Hue-Williams. The park, which spans 50 acres of lush forests, adjoins Hue-Williams’ gallery, Albion Barn, known for displaying the work of contemporary top talent like Nick Knight and Henry Hudson – by appointment only, of course.

“As I walked through these beautiful grounds during the lockdown, I realized I had a unique opportunity to share the experience,” recalls Hue-Williams, who has owned the property privately for some time. “Access to this land, combined with my many years of experience working with contemporary sculpture, made the decision to open an outdoor sculpture park compelling.”

With his clear focus, Hue-Williams embarked on a venture rivaling the robust art programs of historic homes like Houghton Hall and Blenheim Palace – both of which regularly feature vibrant sculptural displays on their manicured grounds. What sets Albion-Fields apart, however, is its secluded location and the fact that the contemporary sculptures that inhabit the park are available for purchase.

“The public is very interested in sculpture, especially in the countryside of southern England where opportunities are so limited,” remarks Lord Rothschild – a great patron of the arts in Britain and a staunch supporter of Albion – Fields. “In the current pandemic situation, that would be even more beneficial.”

To this end, the inaugural exhibition currently on display – in partnership with the Goodman Gallery, Marian Goodman Gallery, König Galerie and Lisson Gallery – offers visitors the opportunity to meet 26 works by leading international artists; including maestros Cristina Iglesias, Erwin Wurm and Jeppe Hein. Particularly when experienced in the afternoon balm, the sculptures seem to transform into anthropomorphic curiosities; and the surrounding woods in an enchanted forest.

Visitors are encouraged to walk along landscaped paths to viewpoints throughout the park, allowing for more forgiving footwear and the ability to meet each totem pole individually. the menagerie sculptural works will rotate twice a year and, given the alluring opening run, are sure to draw art lovers to Albion-Fields once again.

Made in harmony with flora and fauna, Hue-Williams was granted permission to create his oasis from the South Oxfordshire Council after receiving support from Lord Rothschild, Lord Vaizey, Sir Anish Kapoor, Sir Nicholas Serota, Sir Richard Long and local MP John Howell.

In a laudatory endorsement of the park, Lord Vaizey said, “Albion Fields is the perfect way to enjoy art in these difficult times. It will enhance the region and make a huge contribution to the cultural life of the country. ‘ From the glowing reviews that abound, I totally agree.
